Malaria Microscopy and EQA

Malaria is a life-threatening but curable and preventable disease. Malaria is caused and spread by the Anopheles mosquito through mosquito bites. Malaria can be prevented by vector control and chemo-preventive measures.

The disease is endemic to 85 countries in the world, having claimed 608 000 lives in 2022. Pregnant women and children less than five are more susceptible to malaria.

The vision of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and global malaria community is to eliminate malaria in all countries and territories through deliberate actions.

The Wits Diagnostic Innovation Hub is a clinical laboratory that offers malaria microscopy proficiency testing and external quality control services to clinical labs and labs enrolled on malaria studies. The proficiency scheme helps microscopists maintain their malaria microscopy skills.

The microscopy proficiency testing scheme is conducted in line with WHO guidelines. Microscopists are graded and certified three times a year on malaria parasite detection, speciation, and quantification. Labs interested in enrolling should contact malariaeqa@witsdih.ac.za
